Junior Doctors in Madhya Pradesh Strike Over Stipend Issues

Bhopal, March 9: Junior doctors at the Government Medical College in Madhya Pradesh have gone on strike due to the non-implementation of a newly announced stipend by the government. This strike is significantly impacting healthcare services, as outpatient department (OPD) treatments are being disrupted. However, essential surgeries are still being conducted.

The state government had promised approximately 8,000 junior doctors a new stipend starting in April 2025. The junior doctors claim they have not received this stipend or the pending arrears. Consequently, they decided to initiate the strike.

Starting Monday, the junior doctors have entered an indefinite strike. The Junior Doctors Association stated that they have repeatedly urged the government to fulfill its promise regarding the stipend, but their requests have been ignored.

In response to the government’s inaction, the doctors organized a march on Sunday, issuing a warning to the authorities. Despite this, their demands were not addressed, leading to the current indefinite strike. It has been reported that, in consideration of patient care, junior doctors are not obstructing emergency surgeries, although routine operations have been halted, and OPD treatments are suspended.

The strike has garnered full support from resident doctors and others in the medical community. Meanwhile, the government is attempting to communicate with the striking junior doctors. The state’s Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister, Rajendra Shukla, is currently out of Bhopal, and it is anticipated that he may meet with a delegation of the striking doctors in Jabalpur.
