Chennai, May 9: Joseph Vijay, the leader of the Tamilaga Vetria Kazhagam (TVK), has made significant strides towards forming a government in Tamil Nadu by securing the backing of 120 legislators. This development positions Vijay as a strong contender for the Chief Minister role, surpassing the majority threshold in the 234-member assembly. National Secretary of the AICC, Nivedith Alva, expressed optimism that the Governor will soon schedule the swearing-in ceremony for the new government.
In an exclusive conversation with a news agency, Alva stated that they have received information that Vijay will soon meet with the Governor. He will bring along letters of support from various parties backing his government. Alva is hopeful that the Governor will be satisfied and will promptly set a date for the new Chief Minister’s oath-taking ceremony.
Notably, the recent support for TVK came from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The leader of the IUML legislative party, SSB Syed Farooq Basha, and Deputy Leader AM Shahjahan formally announced their support by submitting a signed letter to the Governor-in-charge, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Prior to this, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) also declared its support for Vijay, enabling TVK to gather the necessary numbers for government formation.
TVK now enjoys the backing of a total of 120 legislators, including 108 from TVK, 5 from Congress, 2 each from CPI and CPI(M), and 2 from VCK and IUML. Voting for all 234 assembly seats took place in a single phase on April 23. The elections saw a fierce contest among DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), and TVK. In the results announced on May 4, TVK emerged as the largest party, winning 108 seats. However, following Vijay’s decision to retain one of the two seats he won, the effective strength of the party has now been adjusted to 107.
