Bhopal, March 5: Jitu Patwari, the President of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, has raised concerns regarding the government’s negligence in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted that thousands of positions in the agriculture department remain unfilled, leaving farmers in distress.
In his letter, Patwari pointed out that Madhya Pradesh is known as the country’s agricultural hub. However, the state’s agricultural system is struggling under the weight of governmental apathy. Despite the state government declaring 2026 as the Year of Agricultural Welfare, the current state of the bureaucracy mocks this announcement.
He noted that there are 14,500 sanctioned positions in the agriculture department, with approximately 8,500 of them vacant. This indicates that 60% of the workforce is absent. Patwari questioned how the government can claim to address farmers’ issues under such circumstances. He emphasized that this problem extends beyond the agriculture department to nearly all related departments.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Union Minister of Agriculture, has strong ties to Madhya Pradesh and served as the state’s Chief Minister for nearly two decades. Patwari criticized that if the agricultural system had been strengthened during Chouhan’s long tenure, the current situation would not be so dire.
He urged the Prime Minister to conduct an immediate review of the vacant positions in the agriculture and related departments. Patwari also called for the state government to initiate a recruitment process for these departments and to develop a national strategy to enhance institutional capacity for effective implementation of agricultural schemes at the grassroots level.
