Mumbai, March 5: Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah reached a significant milestone on Thursday at Wankhede Stadium during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against England. He became the eighth Indian player to take 500 international wickets, claiming his first wicket with the very first ball of his spell in the fifth over of England’s innings.
Since making his debut against Australia in Sydney on January 23, 2016, Bumrah has excelled across all formats, achieving this remarkable feat. Before him, seven other Indian bowlers, including Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh, Kapil Dev, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, and Javagal Srinath, had reached this milestone.
The 32-year-old bowler from Ahmedabad has taken 234 wickets in 52 Tests, 149 wickets in 89 ODIs, and 117 wickets in 94 T20 matches, showcasing his consistent performance and significant impact across formats.
Bumrah’s performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 has also been impressive. He took nine wickets in six matches for the team led by Suryakumar Yadav, and with his wicket of England’s captain Harry Brook in the semifinal, he brought his total to ten.
In the Super 8 matches against South Africa and the West Indies, Bumrah was India’s leading wicket-taker. Notably, he dismissed two Pakistani batsmen, Sam Ayub and Salman Ali Agha, in his very first over during a Group A match last month at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. With 500 wickets, Bumrah has solidified his place among India’s greatest bowlers.
He is also the highest wicket-taker for India in T20 World Cup history. If he takes four wickets against England in the current semifinal, he will break the record for the most wickets by a fast bowler in men’s T20 World Cup history, currently held by Anrich Nortje.
