Jammu and Kashmir Police Launch Thorough Investigation into Attack on Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar, March 12: The Jammu and Kashmir police have intensified their investigation into the life-threatening attack on former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah during an event in Jammu. Authorities are delving into the criminal history and background of the accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal. The attack, which occurred on Wednesday night, has sparked significant outrage in political circles, leading to widespread condemnation.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the 63-year-old assailant used a firearm to target the National Conference president. During questioning, he allegedly admitted to planning the attack for the past 20 years.

Officials report that investigators are also examining the assailant’s personal life, social connections, and any potential affiliations with organizations to uncover the motive behind the attack. The incident took place as Farooq Abdullah, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary, and Chief Minister’s advisor Nasir Aslam Wani were exiting a wedding ceremony in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu when the assailant fired at them from behind.

Security personnel accompanying Abdullah quickly sprang into action, thwarting the attack. Police recovered the licensed firearm used in the incident from the assailant.

The attacker is reportedly a resident of the Old Mandi area in Jammu. According to reports, he informed the police that he had been seeking an opportunity to target Farooq Abdullah for the last two decades.

Authorities are investigating the assailant’s recent activities and movements leading up to the attack. Senior police officials are currently interrogating him. He stated that he sustains himself through rental income from his shops in Old Mandi, Jammu.

Officials are also looking into how the accused managed to enter the event with a weapon, prompting a review of the venue’s security arrangements. Meanwhile, Ravinder Raina condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. He also emphasized the need for a complete review of Farooq Abdullah’s security measures.

On Thursday, several other political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir condemned the attack and demanded strict action against those responsible. Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi strongly denounced the firing incident during the wedding ceremony involving Farooq Abdullah and the Deputy Chief Minister, expressing concern over such violent occurrences and calling for stringent legal action against the perpetrators.

Former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti expressed shock at the attack, labeling it a serious security lapse. Sajjad Gani Lone, president of the People’s Conference, also condemned the incident. Wahid Ur Rehman Para described the attack as shocking and deeply unfortunate. Senior religious leader and chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq stated that the attempted assassination of Farooq Abdullah is alarming and reprehensible.

Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, who was present with Dr. Farooq Abdullah at the time of the attack, remarked, “By the grace of Allah, Dr. Sahib and all of us are safe. Dr. Sahib is in good spirits and is currently resting at his home in Bhathindi, Jammu.”
