Jaishankar and Iranian Counterpart Discuss Current Situation in West Asia

New Delhi, April 6: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar revealed on Sunday that he received a call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. The two leaders discussed the current situation in the region.

Jaishankar posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Received a call from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. We discussed the current situation.”

However, he did not elaborate on the specific points of their conversation.

This dialogue comes amid rising tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global oil transport route. Military activities in the area have increased, accompanied by sharp rhetoric from various parties, raising fears of a larger conflict.

India is closely monitoring these developments, as it has significant strategic and economic interests in the region. A substantial portion of India’s crude oil imports passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making stability in the area vital for India’s energy security.

In recent days, diplomatic contacts with regional players have intensified, as New Delhi seeks to ensure the safety of its citizens and maintain energy supply routes.

Many Indians reside in several West Asian countries, heightening concerns amid the changing situation.

While the Ministry of External Affairs has not released detailed information about this conversation, such high-level contacts typically aim to assess the situation and exchange ideas on de-escalation measures.

Iran remains at the center of this tension; reports of military incidents and retaliatory actions have further fueled uncertainty. Global powers and regional countries are urging restraint to prevent escalation.

The conversation between Jaishankar and Araghchi is seen as part of India’s ongoing diplomatic efforts amid the continuously evolving situation.

Jaishankar also mentioned on ‘X’ that he had a phone discussion with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani regarding the ongoing conflict.

In another post, he stated that he discussed the changing situation in West Asia with UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed.
