New Delhi, May 5: Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has become a target of deepfake technology and the misuse of artificial intelligence. Expressing her concerns, Meloni stated that numerous fake images of her have been created using AI and circulated on social media as real.
She described this issue not just as a personal attack but as a significant problem that could affect anyone. Meloni urged the public to verify the authenticity of any content before believing or sharing it.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Meloni remarked, “These days, many fake images of me are circulating, created by artificial intelligence, and some extreme opponents are spreading them as real. I must admit that whoever made them has at least made me look better in this case. However, the truth is that anything can be used today to attack and fabricate lies.”
Meloni emphasized, “This issue is not just about me. Deepfakes are a dangerous weapon because they can deceive, manipulate, and attack anyone. I can defend myself, but many others cannot.”
She appealed for a fundamental rule to be applied due to the rising threat of deepfakes: always verify before believing, and ensure authenticity before sharing. “Today it happened to me; tomorrow it could happen to anyone,” she warned.
The growing threat of deepfakes has become a global concern. In India, several high-profile and controversial cases have emerged, primarily involving celebrities and politicians.
Actress Rashmika Mandanna has fallen victim to deepfake technology. A viral video showed a girl’s face replaced with Mandanna’s, and it was later revealed that the video was not real but AI-generated.
Actor Aamir Khan also faced controversy over a deepfake video that depicted him supporting a political party. His team later clarified that the video was fake.
