Irans Planned Retaliation Against Ukraine Halted After Mistake Claim

Tehran, August 4: Following last week’s attack on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea, Iran was fully prepared to respond. The country had devised a plan to strike three Ukrainian targets. This revelation came from Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, during an interview.

In an interview with Press TV, Rezaei stated that Tehran had made all necessary preparations for retaliation, but the action was later called off. The reason for this decision was Ukraine’s assertion that the attack was accidental.

Last week, Iran accused Ukraine of targeting its cargo ship, which was transporting iron materials. The assault resulted in the death of one crew member and left three others injured.

According to the Italian news agency Adnkronos, Ukraine claimed it had conducted drone strikes on two Russian vessels carrying military supplies in the Caspian Sea.

Following the attack, Iran issued a warning of potential retaliation. However, tensions eased after a phone conversation between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Ukrainian counterpart. Araghchi noted that Ukraine assured Iran the attack was not intentional.

Rezaei remarked, “Even if this was a mistake, compensation is expected.”

On July 25, Iran’s Foreign Minister called on the European Union to take ‘decisive’ action regarding Ukraine’s targeting of an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea.

He made this statement during a phone call with EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. According to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, both leaders discussed the current regional situation and recent developments.

On July 26, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi posted on social media platform X, stating, “Volodymyr Zelensky has attacked an Iranian merchant vessel, resulting in the death of a sailor. This is a blatant violation of the United Nations Charter. This act was carried out at Israel’s behest to drag Europe into its war. I have made it clear in discussions with EU High Representative Josep Borrell and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that Kyiv’s actions will not go unanswered.”
