Washington, April 8: The United States has asserted that there has been a significant change in Iran’s negotiation strategy following a shift in its leadership. U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated that continuous American military pressure has compelled Tehran’s “new leadership” to reconsider its approach.
Hegseth remarked, “This new leadership is now moving forward with a fresh perspective on negotiations with us.” He linked this change to the substantial military losses sustained during Operation Epic Fury.
He explained that the current leadership emerged at a time when many top military and political officials in Iran were either killed or incapacitated. “Those now in charge have witnessed the full might of the American military,” he added.
According to U.S. officials, this is why Iran has become willing to engage in a ceasefire and come to the negotiating table. Hegseth noted, “This is why they have come to the table—to stop the gunfire.”
During a Pentagon briefing, it was reported that many senior officials within Iran’s military, intelligence, and defense structures were either killed or rendered ineffective during this military campaign, resulting in a major leadership change.
Hegseth stated that the new leadership now has limited options. This new leadership is deprived of both choices and time, which has forced them to compromise.
The U.S. has characterized this change not as a formal political transformation, but rather as a consequence of losses in war that have impacted Tehran’s decision-making process.
American officials claim that due to this shift, Iran is now prepared to accept Washington’s conditions, which include restrictions on its nuclear program and the reopening of vital maritime routes.
Hegseth emphasized, “They know that this agreement means they will never be able to acquire nuclear weapons.”
However, the U.S. also indicated that the situation within Iran remains uncertain, particularly regarding public sentiment and the future governance structure.
He expressed, “I would like the people of Iran to take advantage of this opportunity,” adding that citizens had faced oppression under the previous regime.
Still, Hegseth clarified that the objective of the American military campaign was not regime change. “That was not our goal,” he stated.
Officials also noted that if Iran attempts to reorganize or initiate aggressive activities again, the U.S. military is fully prepared to respond.
