Tehran, March 29: Iran has been experiencing an internet blackout for 30 days, severely limiting communication with the outside world. Internet access has plummeted to approximately 1% of normal levels, leaving most citizens unable to connect online.
According to internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, this blackout has now entered its 30th day, totaling 696 hours. The situation has resulted in a significant digital isolation for the nation, affecting nearly 90 million citizens during a critical national crisis.
The blackout began following a series of coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel on February 28, 2026. This has led to one of the longest digital shutdowns in the country’s history, as Iran’s digital infrastructure has been heavily impacted.
The blackout coincided with Western nations targeting Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. Amid these attacks, Iranian officials confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Currently, only a few whitelisted services and the National Internet Network (NIN) are operational, while most global websites and platforms remain inaccessible. Reports indicate that the government is employing military-grade jamming technology to block satellite signals, including those from the Starlink network.
The NIN, also known as the “Halal Internet,” is a domestic intranet system that the government uses to maintain internal services, such as banking and government websites, despite the international internet being shut down. During widespread protests at the beginning of 2026, the public was switched to this controlled network, completely severing their contact with the outside world.
