Iran Conflict Claims Over 1,500 Lives and Displaces 3.2 Million

Tehran, March 27: The ongoing conflict in Iran, sparked by airstrikes from the United States and Israel, has resulted in over 1,500 fatalities, according to the Iranian Health Ministry. Reports indicate that the actual death toll may be significantly higher, as officials have yet to complete a full assessment.

The United Nations agency estimates that the devastation caused by the conflict has led to large-scale displacement within the country. The UNHCR reports that since the attacks began on February 28, more than 3.2 million people—over 3 percent of the population—have already been displaced.

As the conflict enters its twenty-seventh day, aid agencies and neighboring countries are bracing for a potential refugee crisis, as civilians flee violence in search of safety.

Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan have reported border crossings, with limited authorized crossings and occasional evacuations of third-country nationals. The number of returnees from Iraq has been low, with only 325 Iranian citizens crossing the border due to the crisis. Within Iran, many have been forced to leave their damaged homes, impacting hospitals, nuclear facilities, refineries, and desalination plants.

Since the onset of the conflict, over 85,176 civilian sites have suffered damage, including 282 health centers, 600 schools, and 64,583 residences. In Tehran alone, local authorities reported that approximately 14,000 residential units have been affected, with at least 6,000 individuals temporarily housed in municipal hotels.

Iran is not the only country facing a displacement crisis due to escalating conflict. The situation in Lebanon is also alarming, as thousands are being forced to leave their homes due to Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.

According to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), the Israeli army has issued evacuation orders for several areas to carry out military actions. This directive affects an area of over 1,470 square kilometers (568 square miles), which constitutes nearly 14 percent of Lebanon’s total land area.
