Tehran, March 4: A three-day mourning ceremony in memory of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will commence tonight at midnight local time. This event is set to take place in Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, where citizens will gather to pay their respects.
According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, details regarding the burial date and further arrangements have yet to be disclosed. State media has emphasized the significance of this ceremony, describing it as a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. Many attendees are expected to arrive from various regions to participate in the tribute.
On Wednesday, Khamenei’s son was announced as the country’s new Supreme Leader, appointed by Iran’s Assembly of Experts. This announcement comes in the wake of the deaths of Khamenei and several top commanders during coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Saturday.
A special report from Iran International indicates that this selection was made under pressure from the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Sources revealed that due to the current wartime situation, a full Assembly meeting was not feasible, leading to decisions being made through virtual meetings and internal consultations.
The report suggests that this appointment is politically sensitive, especially following the recent attacks that resulted in Khamenei’s death. Tensions and confrontations have escalated across the Middle East in the aftermath.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has historically positioned itself as an ideological alternative to hereditary monarchy, rejecting the notion of power being passed down through family lines. Therefore, if the son assumes power after the father, it raises questions about the principles of the regime.
The report also claims that the IRGC exerted considerable pressure on the Assembly of Experts’ religious leaders to support Mojtaba, Khamenei’s son.
