Iran Asserts No Compromise on Uranium Enrichment Rights, Blames US for Escalating Tensions

Tehran, April 16: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, declared that Iran will not compromise on its rights to nuclear enrichment. State media reported on Thursday that Iran’s authority over nuclear energy is based on international law and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

During a press conference in Tehran, Baghaei dismissed speculation circulating in Western media regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment program. He emphasized that there will be no compromise on Iran’s legitimate rights under international law.

He stated that the right to peaceful nuclear enrichment is not a privilege granted by external powers, which can be revoked under pressure or during conflicts. As long as Iran remains a member of the NPT, it should fully benefit from all the provisions of this treaty. In response to recent Iran-US talks in Pakistan regarding enrichment discussions, Baghaei noted that a comprehensive framework must be established before any potential agreement. He cautioned that detailed discussions on sensitive issues like war and peace would be premature until fundamental conditions are set.

Regarding resistance in Lebanon, he affirmed Iran’s longstanding support for “legitimate resistance.” He mentioned that ending the war in Lebanon was also part of the ceasefire agreement discussed during the Islamabad talks.

Baghaei accused the opposing side (Israel) of failing to adhere to the ceasefire terms from the outset. He added that if one party violates its commitments under an agreement, the other party has the right to adjust its responsibilities accordingly.

He refuted claims that Iran has reduced its support for resistance fronts in Lebanon. Commenting on European proposals concerning the security of the Strait of Hormuz, he asserted that Iran and its regional partners are capable of ensuring the safety of this crucial waterway.

He stated that Iran has historically been the guardian of the region and that recent disruptions are a result of conflicts instigated by the US and Israel. He warned that external interference could further complicate the regional situation. He noted that some European countries have not fallen into the trap of US and Israeli strategies, which he sees as a positive sign.

In conclusion, he reiterated that if US intervention ceases, Iran can work with regional countries to maintain stability in the Strait of Hormuz.
