Tehran, May 12: The Iranian government has announced that internet services will be restored once the ongoing conflict comes to an end. Currently, Iran has been experiencing an internet blackout for 74 days. According to internet monitoring organization NetBlocks, over 1,752 hours have passed without the public being able to connect with the rest of the world.
The announcement regarding the restoration of internet services was made by government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani. As reported by Mehr News Agency, she stated, “The government’s perspective is to ensure equal access to all infrastructure, including the internet. We consider internet access a civil right, which is also the president’s viewpoint. We do not recognize discrimination and injustice, and we oppose them.”
She further added, “Our pro-internet policy aims to provide businesses with access to high-quality internet, and we hope that this situation will normalize once the circumstances improve.”
Since the joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, internet services have been disrupted. Millions of people in Iran have faced a near-total internet shutdown lasting 74 days, with access limited to only government-approved websites.
Previously, during the January protests, Iranians also experienced a lack of internet services. According to Al Jazeera, due to the ongoing conflict that began at the end of February 2026, internet services have been completely cut off for over 99% of the population. This is reported to be one of the longest internet blackouts in history, with strict restrictions on social media, VPNs, and foreign websites. During this period, only the ‘National Information Network’ (intranet) has been operational.
Additionally, there is discussion surrounding the IRGC’s three-step plan, which allegedly involves taxing the underwater internet cables. This move could reportedly raise concerns among major companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft.
