Meerut, August 15: Inspector Sunil Kumar of the Uttar Pradesh STF has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra. On the occasion of Independence Day, senior police officials visited the family of the martyred inspector in Meerut to honor them. This prestigious award was given for his extraordinary courage and ultimate sacrifice during an operation against notorious criminals on January 20, 2025.
ADG Bhanu from the Meerut zone met with the family to present the honor. Family members described this recognition as a moment of pride, though it also serves as a reminder of the irreplaceable loss they have suffered with Sunil Kumar’s passing.
The ADG stated that Inspector Sunil Kumar demonstrated exceptional bravery during the operation against notorious criminals on January 20, 2025. He made the ultimate sacrifice for his country and duty. The government provides a monthly allowance for recipients of the Kirti Chakra, and various state governments offer financial assistance or cash rewards to the honored families according to their own regulations.
Sunil Kumar’s son, Manjeet, shared an emotional response regarding his father’s Kirti Chakra. He expressed that receiving the Kirti Chakra is one of the highest honors, making them immensely proud. The UP STF team operates like a family. His family has received significant support from both the central and state governments. Remembering his father’s dedication to duty, Manjeet noted that his father was fully committed to his job, often unable to spend much time with family due to work responsibilities. Duty was paramount for him.
Manjeet further stated that his father sacrificed his life for his job and duty. He recalled arriving at the hospital after hearing about the encounter, only to learn of the heavy losses incurred. During this difficult time, members of the STF team supported their family. Addressing the political debates surrounding encounters, Manjeet mentioned that the opposition often accuses of fake encounters, questioning such incidents. The pain and reality of such events are truly felt when they happen to one’s own family. His father performed his duties with utmost sincerity and ultimately gave his life for it.
Inspector Kumar’s daughter, Neha, also shared an emotional response, stating, “We are very proud.”
