Indore, 2 January: The Madhya Pradesh government on Friday submitted a status report to the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s Indore bench regarding the ongoing contaminated water crisis in the Bhagirathpura area of the city.

The official report, spanning nearly 15 pages, confirmed that four people have died due to drinking polluted water. It also stated that around 200 individuals are admitted to various hospitals, with 35 of them receiving treatment in intensive care units (ICUs).

The matter was listed before a division bench comprising Justice Dwarkadhish Bansal and Justice Rajendra Kumar Vani. The petition was filed as a public interest litigation by Advocate Ritesh Inani, president of the Indore High Court Bar Association.

Petitioner Ritesh Inani criticised the government’s submission as hasty. He pointed out that according to the report, only four deaths have been attributed to the contaminated water supply. The report detailed that 200 people are hospitalised and 35 are in ICUs across different hospitals. The court has scheduled the next hearing for 6 January.

One of the interveners requested the court to impose a ban on media publications regarding the issue to prevent misinformation. However, the bench did not comment on this plea.

While the official figure of deaths stands at four, some reports suggest the toll could be as high as 15. Authorities have been instructed to continue supplying clean water through tankers amid this public health emergency and to ensure adequate medical care.

Indore, which had been ranked India’s cleanest city for eight consecutive years, is now grappling with a serious public health crisis. The leakage of sewage into the municipal water supply due to a pipeline break near a toilet in the Bhagirathpura area has caused widespread illness, including severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration.
