
New Delhi, May 21: India’s tea exports have seen a remarkable increase of 93% over the past 12 years, reaching ₹8,719 crore by the fiscal year 2025-26, up from ₹4,509 crore in 2013-14. This information was shared by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday.
On the occasion of International Tea Day, Goyal highlighted the growing global appeal of Indian tea, describing it as an integral part of the country’s daily life, culture, and traditions.
In a post on the social media platform X, he stated, “Tea is an emotion, and what better way to express it than on International Tea Day! Across India, tea is not just a beverage; it is a vital part of everyday life, conversations, and traditions.”
He added, “From the hills of Darjeeling to the valleys of Assam and the gardens of Nilgiri, every region adds its unique flavor, aroma, and character to a cup of tea!”
The minister noted that improvements in quality standards and ongoing efforts to promote India’s rich tea heritage globally have consistently strengthened the presence of Indian tea in international markets.
Goyal emphasized, “Due to the enhancement of quality standards and the continuous efforts of the Tea Board of India to showcase our rich tea heritage to the world, Indian tea has solidified its presence in global markets over the years.”
Additionally, Goyal mentioned that the organized sector of the Indian tea industry provides employment to approximately 1.2 million workers, with around 58% being women.
In a previous post in June 2025, he remarked, “Women are leading the development of India’s tea sector. Our country is making its mark globally with fragrant tea and a consistent rise in exports.”
In the fiscal year 2025, the total quantity of exported tea was 263 million kilograms, with a total value of ₹7,818 crore.
