India’s Global Role Benefits the World, Says Swedish Ambassador Jain Thesleff

New Delhi: The historic free trade agreement between India and the European Union marks a significant milestone, often regarded as a foundational pact among global trade deals. In an exclusive conversation with a news agency, Sweden’s Ambassador to India, Jain Thesleff, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and India’s growing influence on the world stage.

Speaking about PM Modi’s leadership, Ambassador Thesleff said, “India repeatedly proves its global significance. Having been here for over three years, I have witnessed India’s progress on international platforms. The initiatives led by your Prime Minister were clearly visible during India’s participation in the G20 summit. I am confident we will see similar leadership during the upcoming AI Impact Summit, hosted by your Prime Minister in Delhi. India is taking its rightful place globally, and when India advances, it benefits the entire world.”

Addressing the strength of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement amid global tariff conflicts, he stated, “India and the EU are demonstrating that cooperation and consensus are possible. We can establish a rules-based world order with tariffs agreed upon and respected by all. India is a trusted partner for us. In these volatile and uncertain times, this agreement is proof that collaboration can work against the prevailing instability.”

On India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Thesleff expressed Sweden’s support for UN reforms. “We believe that a reformed, united global community should grant India its rightful place on the Security Council,” he added.

Regarding India’s role in diversifying global supply chains, the ambassador noted, “Globalisation has shown how interconnected we are, but it also teaches us not to depend solely on one source. Flexibility and openness in sourcing are essential. A free trade agreement helps secure supply routes. We see over 400 Swedish companies operating in India, manufacturing not only for India but for the world. In this context, supply routes become a crucial concept.”

Ambassador Thesleff also highlighted India’s abundant talent pool. “India has many young people demonstrating creativity and innovation. We want to attract those pursuing postgraduate and doctoral studies. India already offers excellent undergraduate education. We wish to communicate to those with basic training that we stand for areas like green transition, connectivity, and other sectors where we believe India can advance further.”
