New Delhi, August 12: The Indian Navy has added another vessel to its fleet. On Tuesday, a new generation offshore patrol vessel, named ‘Shruti’, was launched. This vessel is considered a significant achievement for the Navy, being indigenously developed. The launch took place at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.
The name ‘Shruti’ is derived from the four Vedas, reflecting India’s rich cultural and Vedic heritage. This vessel will play crucial roles in anti-piracy operations, maritime surveillance, search and rescue missions, securing vital assets at sea, and providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. These vessels are designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s capability for maritime surveillance and rapid response, especially in the Indian Ocean region where maritime security and monitoring of critical sea routes are vital.
The emblem of the vessel features the Ursa Major constellation and a red and white lighthouse. The lighthouse symbolizes guidance and safety at sea, while the constellation represents the tradition of maritime navigation.
Vice Admiral Sanjay Sadhu, the Navy’s Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, was present at the launch, where Manika Sadhu performed the ceremonial act. Senior officials from the Indian Navy, the Ministry of Defence, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers also attended the event. The construction of these new generation offshore patrol vessels is being undertaken by two Indian shipbuilding companies: Goa Shipyard Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata.
Notably, these vessels are designed and manufactured within the country. They will play significant roles in various critical missions. The new generation patrol vessels will enhance the capabilities of the existing offshore patrol vessels in the Indian Navy, allowing for a wider range of operations in maritime regions.
The launch of ‘Shruti’ marks another important step in strengthening the Indian Navy’s indigenous warship manufacturing capabilities. The domestic design and construction of these vessels reflect India’s growing shipbuilding capacity. This project aligns with the central government‘s initiatives of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) and ‘Make in India’.
The construction of warships and patrol vessels by Indian shipbuilding companies is expected to boost the country’s defense production capacity and strengthen the indigenous defense industry and related sectors. Therefore, the launch of Yard 3037 ‘Shruti’ is regarded as another significant milestone in the Indian Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding campaign.
