Indian Government Works to Evacuate Citizens Trapped in Iran Amid Middle East Crisis

New Delhi, March 12: Amid the escalating Middle East crisis, the Indian government is actively working to rescue its citizens stranded in Iran. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has held three discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. This information was shared during a press briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that Minister Jaishankar has communicated with his Iranian counterpart three times in recent days. The latest conversation focused on maritime security and India’s energy safety. However, he noted that it would be premature to disclose further details at this time.

Jaiswal reiterated the government’s concern for Indian citizens’ evacuation and emphasized ongoing efforts to provide all necessary assistance. He mentioned that the Indian government is aiding citizens trapped in Iran. For those wishing to return to India via Azerbaijan and Armenia, assistance is being provided to secure visas and facilitate border crossings.

He reported that approximately 9,000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran, including students, seafarers, business professionals, and some pilgrims.

Jaiswal claimed that several Indian citizens, particularly students, have successfully returned home. Additionally, many Indians residing in Tehran, including students and pilgrims, have been relocated to safer cities within the country as a precaution.

Once again, he confirmed that Indian citizens wishing to return through Azerbaijan and Armenia are receiving help with visas and land border crossings. Many have successfully reached Azerbaijan and Armenia, from where they are taking commercial flights back to India.

Randhir Jaiswal also advised Indian citizens planning to leave Iran overland to adhere to the advisory issued by the Indian Embassy.
