Indian Captain Shubman Gill Injured Ahead of ODI Series Against West Indies

Shubman Gill suffers an elbow injury from a bouncer during practice, raising concerns ahead of the ODI series against West Indies.

Thiruvananthapuram, September 25 (Daily Kiran) : In Thiruvananthapuram, Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill sustained an injury to his right elbow just days before the first One Day International (ODI) against the West Indies. The incident occurred during a practice session on Friday, when a rising delivery from fast bowler Mohammad Siraj struck Gill’s elbow.

The mishap took place at the Greenfield International Stadium, two days prior to the series opener. Gill immediately dropped his bat and left the field in visible pain, requiring approximately 20 minutes of medical attention from team physiotherapist Kamlesh Jain.

Concerned teammates, including veteran batsman Virat Kohli, rushed to check on Gill, who appeared to be in significant discomfort. While support staff applied a bandage to his elbow, Gill chose to sit on the sidelines for the remainder of the session and did not return to bat. However, he was later seen sharing light moments with young fast bowler Gurnoor Barar.

With the first ODI scheduled for Sunday, the Indian team management will closely monitor Gill’s recovery. Notably, he faced a similar fitness issue last month in Sri Lanka, where he injured his ring finger during practice but managed to recover in time to participate fully in the series.

Before the injury, Gill was in good form, batting alongside Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Both Rohit and Kohli engaged in lengthy practice sessions, facing national team bowlers as well as local net bowlers.

This injury comes at a challenging time for the Indian team, which is already grappling with several fitness issues. Key all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana are currently sidelined. Meanwhile, the West Indies team, which arrived in the city on September 23, has yet to conduct a training session. They are expected to practice on Saturday, just a day before the match.

The West Indies are entering this series amid financial difficulties in their cricketing structure. Recently, Cricket West Indies announced a 25% reduction in players’ retainer fees and canceled this year’s men’s Super50 tournament due to rising operational costs.

Tensions are high as both teams prepare for the upcoming series.
