India to Launch Fully Online Census Process in 2027

New Delhi, March 30: The Census Commissioner, Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, will hold an important press conference on Monday regarding the census process in India. He will outline how the census will be conducted.

For the first time, the census process in India will be entirely online. Within a specified timeframe, citizens will need to provide their details related to the census. In the 2027 census, live-in couples residing in the same household will be considered as married couples. This clarification was made public for the first time during the discussion of frequently asked questions on the self-enumeration portal.

According to sources, “If a couple considers their relationship stable, they should be regarded as married.” This marks the first public clarification on this issue. Based on the online system, individuals will self-enumerate during this census. The number of married couples living in a household will be one of the 33 questions in the household listing phase, which will last for 45 days.

The household listing phase will take place from April 1 to September 30, with specific dates announced by each state or union territory. During this phase, data will be collected on 33 parameters, including building lists, construction materials, drinking water, sanitation, household assets, and cooking fuel. Additionally, the gender of the household head (male/female/transgender) will also be recorded.

The second phase will commence in February 2027, where details such as name, age, date of birth, marital status, education, occupation, religion, caste/tribe, disability, and migration will be documented. This survey will also include homeless individuals.

Around 3 million enumerators, supervisors, and other officials will participate in the nationwide campaign, collecting data door-to-door through a secure mobile application. The government’s aim is to make this extensive census more accurate, secure, and comprehensive through the use of technology.
