India Takes Major Step in Quantum Computing with Indigenous Dilution Refrigerator Development

DRDO partners with a startup to develop a 20 millikelvin dilution refrigerator, enhancing Indias quantum computing capabilities.

New Delhi, September 24 (Daily Kiran) : The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has made a significant move towards self-reliance in quantum technology. On September 24, 2026, it announced a partnership to develop a 20 millikelvin dilution refrigerator domestically.

This initiative aims to create a cryogenic system capable of achieving extremely low temperatures of 20 millikelvin. Such technology is essential for quantum computing and its associated advanced technologies.

The agreement was signed under the Technology Development Fund scheme with Zero MK India Private Limited, a startup based in Alwar, Rajasthan. This partnership marks a milestone as it is the first high-value deep-tech project between DRDO and a startup under this fund.

The deal is part of a broader ₹500 crore fund approved by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for deep-tech and cutting-edge technological projects. The signing took place in New Delhi, involving the Director of the Technology Development Fund and representatives from Zero MK India.

According to the Defence Ministry, dilution refrigerators are specialized cryogenic systems used to generate extremely low temperatures. Many quantum computing platforms and related technologies operate in such cold environments, making these systems crucial for the development and testing of quantum computers.

Currently, India relies heavily on foreign technology and imports for such advanced cryogenic equipment. The indigenous development of a 20 millikelvin dilution refrigerator is expected to reduce this dependence. It will also promote research, development, and industrial capabilities related to quantum technology in the country.

This project aligns with the goals of the National Quantum Mission, emphasizing the development of domestic capabilities in advanced cryogenics and strategic technologies.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, industry partners, and all stakeholders involved in this important project. He expressed hope that this collaboration would set a precedent for future projects in emerging technologies.

Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Defence Department and Chairman of DRDO, also extended his best wishes to the teams involved, wishing them success in achieving the project’s objectives.

Key officials present included the Director of Micro Electronic Devices and Computational Systems and Cyber Security, the Director of Technology Management, and the Director of the Solid State Physics Laboratory, among others.

The project will be monitored, guided, and technically supported by the Director of the Solid State Physics Laboratory and his team. A notable aspect of this initiative is the combination of DRDO’s expertise with the technical capabilities of the startup. Such collaborations are expected to accelerate the indigenous development of essential advanced tools for emerging technologies like quantum computing in India.
