Opposition Questions Punjabs Law and Order as Minister Accuses Them of Political Motives

Opposition raises concerns over Punjabs law and order, while the government claims they are merely politicizing the issues.

Chandigarh, October 23 (Daily Kiran) : The Punjab Assembly session continued to be marked by chaos as opposition members raised pressing concerns about the state’s law and order situation. On the second day of the session, the Bhagwant Mann-led government responded by accusing the opposition of engaging in political theatrics.

Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal addressed the protests outside the assembly, stating that the opposition lacked substantive issues to discuss. He criticized them for raising irrelevant topics in the house. Goyal remarked, “If they truly cared, they should visit the families affected by the Ajay murder case and stand with them, rather than using the assembly for political gain.”

On the issue of law enforcement, Goyal asserted that the police are effectively managing incidents as they arise. He challenged the opposition to reflect on the conditions in states where they hold power.

Meanwhile, former Punjab BJP president and Pathankot MLA Ashwani Sharma launched a scathing attack on the state government, claiming it is fearful and avoiding public issues. He highlighted a rise in criminal activities, stating, “Criminals roam freely in Punjab. The government appears completely helpless. Look at the situation in Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur, where attacks occur in broad daylight.”

Sharma accused the state of being dominated by land, mining, and drug mafias. He asserted that anyone who speaks out against drug issues is silenced, and the assembly has become a platform for empty speeches and misinformation, leading to a loss of public trust.

Other opposition legislators demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, arguing that the government has lost its moral standing. They claimed that the Chief Minister’s residence has turned into a hub of corruption, with promises of debt relief unfulfilled and the public feeling abandoned.

Gurdaspur MLA Barindermeet Singh Pahra expressed alarm over the frequent murders and extortion calls in Punjab. He cited a recent robbery in Gurdaspur amounting to 12 crore and noted injuries from grenade attacks, criticizing the Chief Minister for failing to visit victims or provide compensation.

The situation in Punjab remains tense as the opposition continues to push for accountability from the government.
