India Sets Record with Highest Knockout Score in T20 World Cup

Ahmedabad, March 8: In a historic match during the T20 World Cup 2026 final, Team India achieved a remarkable feat against New Zealand. Batting first at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, the Indian team scored 255 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. This score marks the highest ever in T20 World Cup knockout matches.

India broke its own record set in the semifinals, where they scored 253 runs against England, losing 7 wickets in the process. This achievement also establishes India as the team with the highest score in a T20 World Cup final, and it ranks as the third-highest score in T20 World Cup history. Indian batsmen hit a total of 37 boundaries during the final.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to have India bat first. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson provided a blazing start, amassing 98 runs for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs. Abhishek, who had struggled with form leading up to the final, scored a quick half-century off just 18 balls, finishing with a powerful 52 runs off 21 deliveries.

Sanju Samson also made headlines by scoring his third consecutive half-century in the tournament. He faced 46 balls to score a stunning 89 runs, including 5 fours and 8 sixes. With this performance, he became the highest scorer in a T20 World Cup final, surpassing Marlon Samuels’ previous record of 85 runs. Samson is now only the third player to score three consecutive half-centuries in T20 World Cup history, joining the ranks of Virat Kohli and Shahid Afridi.

Additionally, the Indian team set a record for the most runs scored during the powerplay in T20 World Cup history, with Sharma and Samson contributing 92 runs. They also achieved the fastest 50 and 100 runs in a T20 World Cup knockout match, reaching 50 runs in just 4 overs and 100 runs in 7.2 overs.
