New Delhi, April 29: India has condemned the recent attacks on commercial shipping in the Hormuz Strait during a United Nations Security Council meeting. The country has called for the immediate resumption of free navigation, which is vital for India’s energy and economic security.
India’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Pavan Patel, stated on Tuesday, “Commercial shipping should not be targeted by military attacks, and such attempts are deplorable.” While he did not name any specific country, his remarks were a clear reference to Iran. Patel reminded the council that India co-sponsored a proposal brought forth by Bahrain, which strongly condemned Tehran’s attacks on its Middle Eastern neighbors.
He emphasized, “It is important to note that India co-sponsored UNSC Resolution 2817, which was adopted on March 11.” Reports indicate that Iran has attacked Indian vessels and a ship en route to India. Additionally, at least three Indian sailors have been killed in attacks on vessels from other countries. Meanwhile, the United States has imposed a blockade in the Hormuz region.
During the meeting called by Bahrain, the Council President, Patel reiterated, “We stress that targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members, or obstructing navigation and commerce in the Hormuz Strait, is unacceptable.” He highlighted that unhindered shipping through the Strait is crucial, serving as an important connectivity route for India. The maritime trade and energy supply chains are geographically linked, directly impacting the country’s economy and energy security.
Patel noted, “Approximately 10 million Indians live and work in the Gulf region; their safety and well-being are paramount for us.” He called for dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions in the Gulf area, stating, “The Middle East is our closest neighborhood, and we play a significant role in ensuring the security and stability of this region.”
