Dubai, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian women’s cricket team has made history by winning the Women’s Asia Cup for the eighth time, triumphing over Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. However, in a notable gesture, the team chose not to accept the trophy from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President, Mohsin Nakvi.
The award ceremony concluded after medals were presented to match officials and Sri Lankan players, with the Indian team opting to skip the event. This decision echoes a similar one made by the men’s team in 2025 when they refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Nakvi, leaving them without the accolade to this day.
Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian squad displayed exceptional performance throughout the tournament. In the final match, they set a target of 184 runs for Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for just 111. Smriti Mandhana and Shefali Verma were instrumental, forming a record opening partnership of 129 runs, with both players scoring half-centuries.
On the bowling front, the Indian bowlers excelled, with Shafali claiming four wickets and Deepti Sharma taking three. Kranti Gaud and Prema Rawat also contributed with one wicket each.
Both India and Sri Lanka reached the final undefeated, topping their respective groups. India’s journey included a historic victory over arch-rivals Pakistan, while Sri Lanka secured their spot in the final with a hard-fought win against Pakistan in the semifinals.
This latest victory further solidifies India’s dominance over Sri Lanka in women’s T20 cricket. Out of 32 matches played between the two nations, India has won 26. With eight titles from ten final appearances, the Indian women’s team stands as the most successful in the history of the Women’s Asia Cup.
