
Panjim, June 24: Host nation India achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday during the 5th Asia Cup Bridge Championship 2026. The women’s team secured their spot in the semifinals, set to take place this Friday at the Taj Cidade de Goa Horizon in Panjim.
In another positive development for India, Team B has taken a commanding lead in the seniors’ category. Meanwhile, Team A remains competitive in several categories. This tournament, recognized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and supported by the Sports Authority of India (SAI), has now reached its final qualifying round.
The women’s double round robin concluded with China leading the table with 127.61 victory points (VPS). Indonesia followed in second place with 108.23 VPS, while India A secured third with 105.30 VPS. Japan rounded out the top four with 89.14 VPS. All four teams will compete in the semifinals on Friday. India B finished their campaign in ninth place with 69.98 VPS.
In the seniors’ category, India B dominated with 144.67 VPS, followed by Australia in second place with 133.19 VPS. Chinese Taipei secured third with 127.44 VPS, and Japan is in fourth with 113.82 VPS. India A stands fifth with 109.94 VPS, while Thailand and Bangladesh remain in contention with 108.41 VPS and 107.12 VPS, respectively.
In the open (men’s) category, China (163.93 VPS) and Hong Kong China A (159.81 VPS) have secured their semifinal spots. India A is solidly in third place with 154.10 VPS and has a chance to qualify. Bangladesh B is currently fourth with 146.47 VPS, while India B trails slightly with 140.03 VPS and Japan at 124.32 VPS. With two matches remaining, the final placements are still undecided.
The mixed category has seen the most fluctuations. China A (152.68 VPS), China B (152.05 VPS), and Hong Kong China A (140.37 VPS) have already qualified. The fourth spot remains open, with Singapore at 115.14 VPS, Thailand at 111.21 VPS, India A at 110.85 VPS, and Australia B at 104.97 VPS.
The qualification rounds will conclude on Thursday, determining the semifinalists in each category. Knockout play and pairs qualifying series will commence on Friday, culminating in the grand final on Saturday.
