London, 2 August β€” At the end of Day 3 of the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series at The Oval, England stood at 50 for 1, chasing a target of 374 runs set by India. With 324 runs still required and eight wickets in hand, the visitors have taken firm control of the match.

England lost their first wicket in the form of Zak Crawley, who was clean bowled by Mohammed Siraj for 14 runs, just before stumps were called. Ben Duckett remained unbeaten at 34 runs off 48 balls.

Earlier in the day, India posted a commanding 396 runs in their second innings, thanks to a century from Yashasvi Jaiswal and crucial half-centuries from Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar. Jaiswal scored a fluent 118 off 164 balls, including 14 fours and 2 sixes. Akash Deep, who came in as a nightwatchman, stitched a valuable 107-run partnership for the third wicket with Jaiswal and scored 66 runs off 94 balls with 12 boundaries.

India’s lower order, which had struggled throughout the series, contributed significantly this time. Jadeja made 53, Sundar added another 53, and Dhruv Jurel chipped in with a vital 34 runs. Josh Tongue was the pick of the bowlers for England, claiming five wickets.

With a lead of 373 runs, India began their bowling effort with energy and precision. England’s openers initially looked to score quickly, but Siraj curtailed the run rate effectively. After 13 overs, England crossed the 50-run mark but lost a key wicket, setting the tone for a challenging fourth day.

India will now aim to finish the match before the tea break on Day 4 and level the series. The pitch has flattened somewhat, and signs of fatigue are visible among the English bowlers, which India capitalised on during their innings. The momentum is firmly with the visitors.
