Imtiaz Alis New Film Explores Partition Through the Eyes of a 78-Year-Old

Mumbai, April 7: Director Imtiaz Ali is set to release his period drama film “Main Wapas Aaunga.” This film portrays the pain and struggle experienced during the 1947 Partition. Ali believes he has captured this narrative through the perspective of a 78-year-old.

In a recent interview, the director shared insights about the film’s intricate details. He stated, “Since childhood, I have been reading stories about the Partition. These narratives, penned by remarkable writers, have always been inspiring. Their perspectives were fascinating. Additionally, I listened to those who witnessed the Partition firsthand. While shooting in Punjab, I encountered even more stories. Observing how people now recall events related to the Partition made me realize that their perspectives have changed.”

He added, “The memories they cherish today are quite different from the past. I believe the story of the Partition should be viewed through the eyes of a 78-year-old. Many individuals around us have families that not only endured the pain of Partition but also faced the challenges of migration and displacement.”

Imtiaz’s films are known for their deep research. In “Main Wapas Aaunga,” special attention has been given to costumes, lenses, and locations. He elaborated on the film’s detailing, saying, “We often perceive our memories in the same way the character Isha recalls her world before the Partition. She holds onto images from her college days.”

He emphasized that every memory carries a unique color and feeling. It may not always reflect reality, but over time, like after 78 years, those memories acquire a gentle, rosy hue. He concluded, “With this thought, the film’s visuals have been crafted. By using special lenses, lighting, costumes, and camera techniques, we aim to convey how a beautiful memory feels.”
