IIT Delhi Launches Comic Book to Make Material Science Engaging for Students

New Delhi, March 19: IIT Delhi has embarked on a creative initiative to bring the world of material science to life through cartoons, stories, and colors. The institute has developed a unique comic book-style brochure for this purpose.

Titled ‘Delivering a Material Safari Experience,’ the brochure explains scientific concepts through engaging narratives and illustrations. At its center is a fun and knowledgeable character, ‘Prof. Material,’ who takes a curious student on a ‘safari’ through the realm of material science. This guide leads students on a jungle-like journey through various fields, including metals, ceramics, polymers, data science, and emerging smart materials.

Through this captivating storytelling approach, the brochure aims to simplify complex scientific concepts and highlight their connections to the real world. The narrative subtly weaves in IIT Delhi’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. Prof. Jayant Jain from IIT Delhi stated, “The concept of this comic book was designed to prominently showcase the engaging and entertaining aspects of STEM. Material engineering is an incredibly creative and inspiring field, and we wanted a medium that could attract both students and non-technical readers alike.”

“Through the exciting adventures of Prof. Material, we hope to spark curiosity and showcase the excitement behind understanding the materials that shape our world,” he added. Prof. R. Lakshmi Narayan, who is leading this initiative, explained, “The idea was for students to view materials as objects they interact with daily. We want their work to feel not overly technical but entirely natural and logical. Prof. Material’s journey through the world of materials will create a new imaginary realm through which we aim to reach our young material scientists.”

The institute has announced that following the first edition of the comic book, a series of additional comic books will be released periodically. These will aim to reflect the essence of the department, its research projects, and educational activities through art. This creative initiative is part of the broader mission of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering to communicate science in accessible, relevant, and inclusive ways.
