Kolkata, May 4: A significant upset has occurred in the high-profile Shyampur Assembly constituency in Howrah district, West Bengal. BJP candidate and popular Tollywood actor Hiran Chatterjee has achieved a remarkable victory, dismantling the TMC’s stronghold in the region.
According to the Election Commission results, Hiran Chatterjee secured a total of 125,651 votes, defeating TMC candidate Nadebashi Jana by a margin of 22,260 votes. Congress candidate S.K. Manzoor Alam finished third with 1,988 votes.
Hiran Chatterjee, known by his screen name ‘Hiran’, is a well-known figure in the Bengali film industry. He is also active in academia, holding a PhD and working as a post-PhD research fellow at IIT Kharagpur. Previously, he served as an MLA from the Kharagpur Sadar constituency. His candidacy from the rural Shyampur area has further elevated the profile of this election.
The Shyampur Assembly seat (Constituency No. 179) was established in 1951 and has long been recognized for its political stability. Particularly after 2001, it became an impregnable fortress for the TMC. Kalipada Mandal won five consecutive terms from 2001 to 2021, solidifying the party’s grip on the seat.
However, in the 2026 elections, the BJP made a strategic move by fielding a popular face, which proved advantageous for the party. Hiran Chatterjee’s popularity and grassroots engagement influenced voters, ending the TMC’s long-standing dominance.
The main contest was between the BJP and TMC, with the latter striving to protect its stronghold. This time, the electorate opted for change. Key issues in the election included rural development, agriculture, roads, and basic amenities.
The social dynamics of Shyampur also played a crucial role in the election outcome. This agrarian region is predominantly influenced by the ‘Mahishya’ community, along with significant participation from Scheduled Castes and minority voters. The support from these groups helped create a favorable environment for the BJP.
Administratively, this seat falls under the Uluberia Lok Sabha constituency, which is considered a vital parliamentary seat in the state.
Historically, various parties have influenced this seat over time. Initially, the Forward Bloc and Congress held sway, but since 2001, it has been entirely under TMC control. The BJP’s victory in 2026 marks a new chapter in its history.
Hiran Chatterjee’s win is viewed as a major strategic success for the BJP.
