Herbert Kibet and Khaire Bejiga to Compete in the 18th Edition of World 10K Bengaluru

Bengaluru, March 16: Some of the world’s top runners are set to arrive in Bengaluru for the 18th edition of the World 10K, scheduled for April 26. This prestigious event features a 10-kilometer race.

In the men’s category, Uganda’s Herbert Kibet will be the center of attention. The 20-year-old Kibet, who was a finalist at the World Junior Athletics Championships two years ago, made his 10K debut earlier this year. He achieved a remarkable victory in Castellón, Spain, with a world-leading time of 26:39, marking the sixth fastest timing in the event’s history.

Kibet is among five athletes this year who have run under 27 minutes, but he will face stiff competition from 11 athletes who have recorded faster times than the Bengaluru course record of 27:38.

Kibet expressed his excitement, stating, “This is my first time in India, and at the CCS World 10K Bengaluru, I want to make the most of it as I am in great form.”

He will be challenged by Ethiopia’s Khaire Bejiga (26:51) and two platinum-level runners, Burundi’s Rodrig Kwizera and another Ethiopian, Gemechu Dida. Kwizera was the silver medalist in Bengaluru two years ago, while Dida secured second place at the RAK Half Marathon earlier this year. Their teammate, Tadese Worku, who is also among the five runners to have clocked under 27 minutes, is familiar with the Bengaluru streets, having won silver in 2022.

Two-time World 5000m champion Mukhtar Edris will also participate in the race. Kenya’s strong presence will be highlighted by defending champion Sarah Chepngeno, who is returning to defend her title. If successful, this would mark her second consecutive title win.

Chepngeno remarked, “The TCS World 10K Bengaluru is close to my heart. I would love to win once again in this beautiful city.”

Of the 15 titles held in Bengaluru so far, Kenyan women have claimed 10.

In the women’s category, the fastest runner of 2026, Brenda Jepchirchir, enters with a winning time of 29:25 from the Valencia 10K. However, 2024 Bengaluru champion Lilian Rengeruk Kasait is also returning and poses a significant threat to others vying for the top spot.

Another notable Kenyan entry is world steeplechase record-holder Beatrice Chepkoech, who won the Gold Label Port Gentil 10K in Gabon three years ago.

Cynthia Chepengen, who won silver at both the Bengaluru and Shanghai 10K last year, will also be competing.
