Heavy Rains in Afghanistan Lead to Tragic Loss of Life

Kabul, April 8: Heavy rainfall and sudden flooding in Afghanistan’s Khost province have resulted in the tragic deaths of three women after a wall collapsed. Two children were also injured in the incident.

According to local governor spokesperson Mustagfar Gurbaaz, the accident occurred on Monday in the Ghingini village of the Matun area. He noted that the recent rains weakened the wall, leading to its collapse. The injured children have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In Nangarhar province, heavy rains also caused roofs to collapse, resulting in at least ten fatalities and six injuries.

Ariana News reported on Tuesday that the most affected areas include Jalalabad, Sherzad, Khogyani, Haska Mina, and Angoor Bagh.

Officials stated that in Angoor Bagh, the roof of a house collapsed, killing five people and injuring two. In Sherzad district, a woman and two children lost their lives due to a roof collapse.

In Khogyani district, one person died and two were injured, while in Haska Mina, the collapse of two roofs resulted in the death of one child and injuries to two others.

Authorities warned that the ongoing rains pose a significant threat to homes and infrastructure, especially in rural and mountainous regions where buildings are often not constructed to withstand such weather conditions.

On Monday, officials reported that over the past 12 days, heavy rains, flash floods, landslides, lightning strikes, and building collapses have claimed at least 110 lives and injured 160 others. Seven people remain missing, and the forecast for continued rain raises fears of further casualties.

According to officials, 958 homes have been completely destroyed, and 4,155 have suffered partial damage, leaving thousands of families in urgent need of assistance and shelter. More than 325 kilometers of roads have also been damaged, impacting businesses, agriculture, irrigation channels, and drinking water sources.
