New Delhi, August 24: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across eastern and central parts of the country over the next 24 hours. Alerts have been issued for Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Additionally, Delhi is expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
IMD scientist Akhil Srivastava announced that an orange alert has been issued for Delhi. The capital may see light to moderate rain, with some areas experiencing heavy downpours. Thunderstorms and lightning are also anticipated.
He explained that a low-pressure area affecting the weather in eastern and central India has formed over the Ganges plains near West Bengal and adjacent Jharkhand and northern Odisha. This system is expected to move in a west-northwest direction over the next 24 hours.
Akhil Srivastava noted that this weather system could lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, prompting an orange alert for these regions. An orange alert has also been issued for Kerala.
According to the weather department, Delhi may experience light to moderate rain, with some areas likely to see heavy rainfall shortly. Residents are advised to remain vigilant due to the potential for thunderstorms and lightning.
In Madhya Pradesh, IMD director Dr. Anjit Anjan in Bhopal reported ongoing rainfall, with the possibility of continued precipitation for the next three to four days. However, no heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for Bhopal at this time, although weather advisories have been released for certain areas. With a few days left in August, there is hope for significant rainfall.
On Monday, rain in Delhi-NCR provided relief from the heat, but waterlogging on the roads caused considerable inconvenience, leading to traffic jams that lasted for hours.
