Heavy Rain in Kerala: Schools Closed in Nine Districts, Yellow Alert Issued

Thiruvananthapuram, August 3: Heavy rainfall continued across Kerala on Sunday, leading to flooding in several low-lying areas. As a precautionary measure, district administrations in nine districts have declared a holiday for educational institutions on Monday.

Due to ongoing rain in large parts of the state, the district administrations of Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta announced that all educational institutions will remain closed on Monday.

This decision was made considering the current weather conditions and the likelihood of further rainfall. The holiday applies to schools, colleges, and other educational institutions as per the directives of the district administrations.

Officials have advised students, parents, and educational institutions to stay updated on official announcements, as local restrictions may change based on rainfall and ground conditions.

In Alappuzha district, the administration has declared a holiday for students in schools and colleges currently functioning as relief camps.

A widespread closure has also been ordered in the flood-affected Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, where all educational institutions will remain closed on Monday. This closure includes schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, and tuition centers. These two taluks are among the most vulnerable areas during the continuous monsoon rains, facing significant flooding and inundation.

Rain persisted in many parts of Kerala on Sunday, raising concerns in areas already affected by flooding. Officials are monitoring river water levels and the conditions in both low-lying and hilly areas, as additional rainfall could increase the risk of local flooding and landslides.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for all 14 districts of Kerala for Monday, predicting heavy rainfall in various locations. Forecasts suggest that some areas may receive between 7 to 11 cm of rain within 24 hours.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-affected areas and landslide-prone locations to exercise caution. They advised against unnecessary travel on submerged roads and emphasized strict adherence to the directives of district administrations and disaster management authorities.

Emergency and disaster response teams remain on high alert as the monsoon season continues in the state.
