Chennai, July 15: Tamil Nadu is likely to experience intense heat over the next few days. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has warned that heatwave-like conditions may persist in certain areas of the state, particularly in the interior districts.
The meteorological department has advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea due to expected strong winds along the southern coastal regions.
Forecasts indicate that on Wednesday, heatwave conditions could occur in one or two places in the interior districts. By July 16, daytime temperatures are expected to remain significantly above normal. Temperatures in these areas may exceed seasonal averages by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius.
Coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may see temperatures 2 to 3 degrees Celsius higher than usual.
The weather department has cautioned that high temperatures combined with increased humidity could lead to severe heat and discomfort in several coastal areas. Such conditions elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among children, the elderly, outdoor workers, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the afternoon, and take necessary precautions against the heat.
In Chennai, partial cloud cover is expected over the next two days. However, despite the clouds, persistent high temperatures and humidity may still result in muggy conditions in the city.
The meteorological department warns that people may face considerable discomfort, especially during the early afternoon and evening hours.
Most parts of the state are expected to continue feeling the effects of the heat. The RMC has predicted light to moderate rainfall in the districts of the Western Ghats on Wednesday. Other districts may also experience light rain in one or two areas, providing some relief from the heat.
Strong winds are anticipated in the Gulf of Mannar, the Comorin Sea, and along the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Given the adverse sea conditions, the meteorological department has advised fishermen to avoid these waters until conditions improve.
The department stated it will closely monitor changes in the weather and issue new advisories as necessary. Additionally, it has urged the public to adhere to government forecasts and take essential precautions, as heatwave conditions persist across the state.
