Guwahati Airport Approved as Export Hub for Agarwood Chips and Oil

The Indian government has designated Guwahati Airport as an export center for agarwood products, benefiting local farmers and exporters.

Guwahati, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian government has officially approved Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport as an export hub for agarwood chips and oil. This decision comes as a significant relief for farmers and exporters in Assam, as announced by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.

Goyal shared the news on social media, noting that the approval was granted at the request of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He stated, “Great news for Assam! At the request of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Modi government has approved Guwahati Airport as an export center for agarwood chips and oil.”

This initiative is expected to greatly benefit those involved in the agarwood industry, where Assam is a leading producer. Goyal emphasized that this move not only supports local farmers and exporters but also enhances logistics in the northeastern region, bringing potential markets closer.

Additionally, he extended congratulations to the people of Assam and the northeastern states. This announcement follows Assam’s recent export of 123 kilograms of agarwood to Dubai in October, which the state government hailed as a significant advancement for the traditional agarwood industry. Chief Minister Sarma remarked that this export marks a crucial step towards expanding the international market for Assam’s agarwood sector, which employs over 50,000 farmers and laborers.

Sarma expressed pride in promoting Assam’s fragrant heritage on a global scale, highlighting that approximately 81 percent of the country’s agarwood resources are found in the state. The aromatic wood, derived from the Aquilaria tree species, is widely used in the production of perfumes, incense, essential oils, and traditional fragrant products.
