New Delhi, April 18: The government announced on Saturday that over 1.725 million 5-kilogram LPG cylinders have been sold since March 23, amid evolving circumstances in West Asia. These smaller cylinders are specifically made available for migrant workers.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that since April 3, public sector oil companies, known as Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), have conducted over 6,450 awareness camps, selling more than 90,000 5-kilogram cylinders.
These 5-kilogram cylinders are being distributed to state governments, enabling them to assist OMCs in providing these cylinders to migrant workers in their regions.
Meanwhile, the total supply of commercial LPG has been increased to nearly 70% of pre-crisis levels, which includes a 10% improvement-based allocation.
On April 17, 8,216 metric tons of commercial LPG were sold, equivalent to approximately 432,000 19-kilogram cylinders. Since March 14, a total of 158,583 metric tons of commercial LPG have been sold, including over 9,200 metric tons of auto LPG.
According to the ministry, there has been a shift in demand for auto LPG, with a growing preference for public sector units over private companies. In response to increasing demand, PSU companies have seen a 70% rise in auto LPG sales.
This increase has been particularly notable in states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.
The ministry also noted that 22 states and union territories are receiving additional commercial LPG allocations based on reforms related to PNG (Piped Natural Gas) expansion.
Additionally, more than 476,000 PNG connections have been activated since March, with over 533,000 new customers registering for connections.
As of April 17, over 37,500 PNG consumers have surrendered their LPG connections, reflecting the growing popularity of PNG.
Despite the current global situation affecting LPG supply, the government has prioritized the needs of domestic consumers.
The government clarified that no LPG distributor has run out of gas. As of April 17, online LPG bookings have reached nearly 98%.
To maintain transparency in deliveries, over 93% of deliveries are being conducted through the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) system.
On April 17, more than 5.2 million domestic LPG cylinders were delivered nationwide, showcasing the robustness of the supply system.
