Berlin, March 19: The crisis in West Asia has caused a significant surge in oil prices, and its effects are now clearly visible across Europe. To combat rising fuel costs, the German Parliament is preparing to take an unusual step.
Today, the Bundestag is expected to approve a draft law that will allow gas stations to raise prices only once a day—at noon. However, prices can be reduced at any time. Violators of this rule could face fines of up to €100,000.
If this proposal is enacted, long queues at gas stations may become common just before noon, as consumers rush to fill their tanks to avoid higher prices.
Germany has seen one of the highest increases in fuel prices among European countries following military actions involving the U.S. and Israel. According to European Commission data, petrol prices have risen by 27 cents per liter and diesel by 42 cents per liter compared to the week before the actions. This increase is significantly higher than the European average, which saw petrol rise by 20 cents and diesel by 36 cents per liter.
Data compiled by the independent economic institution Monopolkommission, which advises the German government, indicates that consumers in Germany are bearing the brunt of this global oil crisis.
Armand Jorn, Deputy Chair of the Social Democrats Parliamentary Group, has accused the industry of profiteering. He told the Bild newspaper, “Germany does not have a supply problem, but there is a clear issue with pricing.” Jorn noted that it is rare for consumers in any other European country to face such significant profits at their expense during a crisis.
Public opinion on the “High Noon Rule” (which will take effect after passing through the Bundesrat, the upper house) is divided. The Federation of German Industries (BDI) has criticized the tightening of antitrust laws.
