Gary Kirsten Resigns as Pakistan Head Coach Due to PCB Interference

New Delhi, March 21: The Pakistan cricket team is often in the spotlight due to its frequently changing captains and coaches. Gary Kirsten, who was appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan team with much fanfare, has also seen his tenure cut short. He has now revealed the reasons behind his resignation.

Kirsten, a former South African player who played a crucial role in leading India to victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup, was signed on a two-year contract as the head coach for white-ball cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. However, he stepped down after just six months.

He stated that interference from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was a significant factor in his decision to leave the role.

Kirsten noted that the level of external pressure on team matters was so high that it became extremely difficult to create a stable environment for the players. He expressed that he had never witnessed such a level of interference before, which left him feeling troubled.

He added that when results do not align with expectations, the coach often becomes an easy target. In such situations, it is convenient to hold the coach responsible for the team’s performance.

The former opener also accused the PCB of irregularities related to his contract, outstanding payments, and frequent breaches of contract, citing these issues as additional reasons for his resignation.

Following his departure from Pakistan, Kirsten has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. This change comes after Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2026, which led to the resignation of their previous head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya. Kirsten will assume his new role on April 15, with a contract lasting two years, set to conclude in 2028.
