Mumbai, March 18: The dowry system has long been a persistent issue in Indian society. Although it has decreased over time, it remains far from eradicated. Many families still uphold this tradition, subjecting girls and their families to mental, financial, and emotional distress. In an effort to address these issues, television shows and films are increasingly bringing them to light. One such show, “Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan,” is tackling this serious social concern.
In a recent episode, Ganga Mai, portrayed by Shubhangi Latkar, faces immense pressure to fulfill a hefty dowry demand for her daughter Sahana’s marriage. This situation forces her to mortgage her home, prompting viewers to reflect on the existence of such pressures in today’s society.
Shubhangi Latkar shared her insights about her character, stating, “I strive to portray both Ganga Mai’s struggles and her inner strength authentically. This story reminds us of how deeply rooted practices like dowry are in society, but it also shows that change is possible if one has the courage to speak out against wrongdoings.”
Latkar further emphasized the importance of principles in relationships, saying, “In the past, dowry situations were common, even if people didn’t openly discuss them. However, my family taught me that relationships should be based on respect and trust, not transactions. If something goes against one’s principles, it should not be accepted. Standing up for what is right is essential, no matter how difficult it may be.”
As a mother, Latkar shared her perspective, stating, “I always teach my daughter that self-respect is paramount. One should never compromise their dignity for any relationship. Every girl should understand that she deserves love and respect unconditionally. If a situation contradicts this, raising one’s voice against it is the right course of action.”
The show also features Shezan Khan and Amandeep Sidhu in prominent roles. “Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan” consistently addresses significant societal issues. In upcoming episodes, viewers will witness Ganga Mai, Sahana, and Sneha taking a strong stand against dowry. Additionally, a new twist will reveal that Durgavati discovers Siddhu’s affection for someone else.
Broadcast on ZEE TV, “Ganga Mai Ki Betiyan” compels audiences to consider that change must begin at home.
