New Delhi, March 18: The opening day of the Indian Open 2026 Squash Championship saw mixed results for the host players. India’s Om Semwal delivered an impressive performance, winning a thrilling five-game match in the men’s category, while Tanvi Khanna achieved a commanding victory in straight games in the women’s category. The tournament kicked off on Wednesday at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) courts in Brabourne Stadium.

The first day featured several closely contested matches. Om Semwal edged out Sebastian Salazar with a score of 3-2 (11-6, 11-9, 8-11, 10-12, 19-17), with the final game proving to be particularly exhilarating. Meanwhile, Tanvi Khanna secured a strong 3-0 (15-13, 12-10, 7-11, 11-4) win against Maya Vaishar.

Semwal showcased the best performance of the day in his gripping five-game match against Mexico’s Sebastian Salazar. He maintained his composure during critical moments, clinching a hard-fought 3-2 victory. Egyptian player Yassin Shohdy also impressed, bouncing back after losing the first set 10-12. Demonstrating his fighting spirit and composure, Shohdy won the second game 13-11 and ultimately took control of the match to win 3-1 against France’s Manuel Paquemar.

In other competitive matches, Switzerland’s Ambré Elincks defeated the Netherlands’ Tessa ter Sluis 3-1, while Egypt’s Ibrahim Elkabbani secured a solid 3-1 victory over India’s Suraj Kumar Chand in a tough contest.

Throughout the day, top contenders delivered remarkable performances. Hong Kong’s Chi Him Wong defeated Ayan Wazirally 3-0, while Sofia Mateos also won in straight games against Shamima Riaz. Both Matthew Lai and Daniel Ray started their campaigns in style, winning their respective matches comfortably with scores of 3-0.
