Former South Korean President Yoon Refuses to Attend Itaewon Tragedy Hearing

Seoul, March 10: Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol declined to meet with representatives from the special committee investigating the 2022 Itaewon crowd disaster. Committee members visited the Seoul detention center in an attempt to persuade him to participate in the hearings.

The hearings, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, aim to investigate the tragic incident that claimed 159 lives in October 2022. This inquiry seeks to uncover the events of that day while Yoon was in office.

Commissioner V. Yoon-jin informed reporters that their meeting could not take place as Yoon refused to engage. His lawyers stated that attending the hearings would be challenging due to preparations for his ongoing trial.

Instead, V. Yoon met with the head of the detention center, requesting cooperation to ensure Yoon’s presence at the hearings on Friday.

Yoon is currently in custody, facing trial for an unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law in December 2024 and other related charges.

V. Yoon expressed hope that Yoon would provide a detailed account of the events on the day of the disaster, which could offer solace to the victims’ families and help devise measures to prevent future incidents.

Earlier, on March 9, the main opposition party, the People Power Party, apologized for Yoon’s declaration of martial law in 2024. Amid ongoing internal disputes leading up to local elections on June 3, the party pledged to sever political ties with Yoon.

This announcement was made in a resolution issued in the names of all party members, as Yoon’s martial law attempt and political affiliation have led to a decline in public support and internal divisions within the party.

Some party members have called for a clear distancing from Yoon, while others support the ongoing “Yoon Again” movement.
