Mumbai, May 15: Farmers in Maharashtra’s Konkan region are facing severe losses to their mango and cashew crops due to unseasonal rainfall, climate change, and fluctuating temperatures. In response, a protest was organized on Friday in Mumbai, led by Raju Shetti, president of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana and former MP.
Farmers claim that crop damage has reached as high as 80 to 90 percent in several areas, resulting in significant financial losses for orchardists and farmers. The Mumbai police have issued notices to Raju Shetti and 10 other leaders of the organization regarding the protest.
Shetti accused the state government of being indifferent to farmers’ issues. He stated that despite the crop losses, farmers are not receiving adequate support or compensation. He emphasized that mango and cashew producers in the Konkan region are currently facing a severe crisis, yet the government has not taken any concrete steps to assist them.
The protest took place at Girgaum Chowpatty, followed by a planned march from Girgaum to the Chief Minister’s official residence, ‘Varsha.’ A large turnout of farmers and organization members is expected.
Farmers argue that climate change and unpredictable weather patterns are severely impacting crop production. Thousands of families dependent on mango and cashew farming are in economic distress. They have demanded an immediate survey, a proper assessment of losses, and financial assistance for affected farmers.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai police have taken precautionary measures to maintain law and order. They stated that they would not allow any disturbances during the protest.
