Jalandhar, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Lovely Professional University (LPU) has attributed the recent violence on its campus near Jalandhar, Punjab, to the involvement of external individuals. This unrest led to protests, vandalism, and arson among students.
In response to the situation, the university is enhancing security measures to maintain peace on campus. This announcement comes amid student allegations that outsiders played a role in the disturbances, although the specifics of their involvement and the circumstances leading to the violence remain under investigation.
Following two days of violent protests, Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav visited the university. His visit was prompted by instructions from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who directed him to assess the situation after reports of violence, vandalism, and the burning of three police vehicles during the protests.
DGP Yadav stated that police exercised restraint while dealing with protesting students and minimized the use of force. However, he warned that legal action would be taken against those involved in arson, vandalism, and other unlawful activities.
The protests were sparked by rumors circulating on social media about the sexual harassment of a student by an outsider. The university has dismissed these claims as baseless rumors.
Students are demanding the identification and arrest of the accused, an investigation into previous cases of sexual harassment and suicides on campus, the resignation of the warden from the hostel where the incident allegedly occurred, and direct communication with LPU Chancellor and BJP Rajya Sabha member Ashok Mittal.
As part of the police investigation, authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence, although the identity of the alleged victim has not yet been established. Classes at LPU have been suspended for ten days starting September 28, along with mid-term examinations.
The university management emphasized that it prioritizes the trust, safety, respect, and welfare of its diverse student body, which includes individuals from across India and nearly 50 other countries.
In their statement, the university condemned the actions of antisocial elements who exploited heightened emotions, resulting in damage to university property and disruption of operations. LPU has pledged to take appropriate legal action against any infiltrators involved in the unrest.
