Thiruvananthapuram, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated on September 28 that there is a “singular conspiracy” aimed at depriving Indian citizens of their democratic and constitutional right to vote. He insisted that this conspiracy must be exposed and eradicated.
Tharoor’s remarks come amid controversy following a report from a leading Indian daily. The report indicated that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally raised objections at least 14 times over ten months, claiming that significant decisions were made in the name of the commission without their knowledge.
However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) dismissed the suggestion that these objections equated to institutional dissent regarding final decisions. The ECI clarified that operational questions, suggestions, and input raised during the drafting phase are part of its standard administrative and decision-making processes.
Speaking to a news agency, Tharoor remarked, “The truth is, we see a singular conspiracy aimed at depriving Indian citizens of their democratic constitutional right to vote. This conspiracy must be exposed and ended. Every Indian citizen deserves the right to vote.”
He emphasized that it is preferable for a few individuals without voting rights to cast ballots than for millions of eligible citizens to be denied their voting rights. “It is better if five or ten people, who do not have the right to vote, are allowed to vote rather than millions who are qualified being deprived. This is a real attack on our democracy,” he said.
Tharoor also addressed the upcoming Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, stating he would return that night to participate in the discussions. “Yes, I am going back for the CWC meeting. We are all very concerned about the serious attacks on our democracy, which are unfortunately occurring due to the decisions of the Election Commission, a body we entrusted to safeguard our democratic and electoral processes,” he noted.
He stressed that this issue is serious and would be discussed in detail during the CWC meeting. “This is a very serious matter, and there will be a significant discussion about it in the executive committee on Tuesday,” he added.
Additionally, Tharoor shared his thoughts on India’s recent ODI match against the West Indies, expressing enjoyment in watching the game and satisfaction with India’s easy victory. He mentioned that due to being in the Vice President’s city, he missed the first few hours of the match but caught the remainder. “I must say, winning so easily was satisfying for an Indian, but I wasn’t completely happy. I prefer a more impressive performance at the start of the match,” he said.
