New Delhi, May 24: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer have expressed their support for the ongoing peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, noting positive signs of progress. Both leaders shared their enthusiasm through social media posts.
They stated, “I welcome the progress being made towards an agreement between the US and Iran. We need a deal that genuinely reduces tensions, reopens the Strait of Hormuz, and guarantees full freedom of navigation without any fees.”
Ursula emphasized the necessity of ensuring that “Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons” and should not destabilize the region, either directly or through its allied groups.
Von der Leyen mentioned that Europe is ready to assist in limiting the impact of this conflict and working towards a sustainable diplomatic solution.
Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also praised the “progress” being made towards a US-Iran agreement. He remarked, “We need a deal that ends the conflict and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, while ensuring unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation. It is crucial that Iran is never permitted to develop nuclear weapons.”
Starmer added that his government will continue to make every effort to protect the British public from the negative impacts of this conflict. He further stated, “We will work with our international partners to seize this opportunity and strive for a long-term diplomatic solution.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is visiting India, claimed during a press conference that the US-Iran peace talks are progressing in the right direction, with announcements expected soon. Previously, US President Donald Trump had also indicated similar sentiments.
