New Delhi, March 7: Every year, International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8. This year, the National Sevika Samiti organized a two-day national conference titled ‘Bharati Nari Se Narayani’ at Vigyan Bhawan in the capital. The event commenced on Saturday.
Retired Professor Dr. Preeti Goyal from Delhi University attended as the chief guest. Speaking to a news agency, she shared, “I have been invited as a chief and special guest for this event organized by the National Sevika Samiti. I taught at Delhi University for 30-32 years before taking voluntary retirement. I am currently engaged in my work, and I have been associated with the National Sevika Samiti since I was ten years old, attending branch meetings. This connection is why I was invited as a special guest.”
Dr. Goyal expressed her delight at being present. Discussing women’s empowerment, she stated, “In my opinion, women are already empowered. We misuse the term ’empowerment.’ Mothers are inherently strong, and there is no need to empower them further. What is needed is a change in societal attitudes.”
She emphasized that this change should partly come from the government and noted that the male society also requires some transformation.
When asked about the societal changes occurring, Dr. Goyal remarked, “The change is not happening because of a shift in mindset. It is occurring because girls are advancing in every field. Some changes in societal thinking are happening organically, and there have been some shifts in the male mindset compared to before.”
Addressing what further changes are needed in society, she pointed out, “There is still a lack of equality in people’s perceptions regarding women.”
Dr. Goyal added, “In my view, women work harder than men. They manage the household while excelling in their professional roles. If we look at it this way, women do 60% of the work, while men do 40%.”
