Geneva, March 12: Siby George, Secretary (West) of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, delivered a statement at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. He emphasized that empowering all of humanity with digital tools enhances human rights.
During his address, George recalled India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar’s recent remarks at this significant council. He noted that discussions should evolve from mere statements and proposals to tangible improvements in the daily lives of the most vulnerable populations. “We firmly believe that a balanced approach to all human rights, based on integrated development, is the most effective path forward,” he stated.
George highlighted that India has extensively utilized digital tools to broaden access to rights for all citizens. This initiative has facilitated justice, civil and political rights, democratic participation for 1.4 billion Indians, and the empowerment of women. He expressed pleasure in noting that the recent AI Impact Summit in New Delhi recognized that the true potential of AI is realized when its benefits are equitably shared worldwide, including participation from the Global South.
He also pointed out that terrorism remains one of the greatest threats to human rights. “We must remain steadfast in our resolve to combat all forms of it. This council should continue to speak with one voice on this issue,” he urged.
Additionally, the Indian Embassy in Geneva shared a video highlighting George’s statement during the HRC61 Item 3 General Debate, underscoring how digital tools and AI empower 1.4 billion Indians.
George reiterated the need for a unified stance against terrorism, labeling it as one of the most significant threats to human rights.
